Ranger's trips to California

Alas, Ranger's first foray into the Big Dog Ring wasn't exactly what we had planned. In Napa, the only other dog entered took the single point and finished. Big congrats to Chaps Woodsy Corgyn who moved up the next day, so no boy point.

The SLO shows in Paso Robles were no different. The only other dog entry was the same fellow who finished the weekend before, so again, no points. There was, however, another entry on Monday's Santa Maria Kennel Club show. And Woo Hoo, Ranger went WD and earned his first point. If you'd like to see the little guy in action, Samantha Nye took a couple of great videos of him in the ring. This first link is the puppy class. It had been raining all night. The ground was wet, rocky and uneven and Ranger definitely didn't like it. Puppy Class This next link is the WD class. "I don't wanna stand, Auntie Ange." Big thanks to Sam for the videos.

Then off to Turlock first with Stockton to follow. Again, no points in Turlock since the other dog entry was the dog who finished and there was only 1 bitch. Stockton was going to be the show with a point. Entries both days were 2-2-1-2. As luck would have it, the other boy was, you guessed it, that same dog. But, there were 2 girls entered. There was a possibility of a crossover point, finally. Yes! But wait. That didn't happen. One of the girls' owners decided to go home early. She took away the bitchs' point and the hope for a crossover for both days, so what was the reason for staying?

Poor Angelia Hall gave up a family Thanksgiving to travel to California and try to get some points on not only Ranger, but also the class bitch. I know how big a sacrifice it was. But Angie is dedicated to not only the dogs, but also to the people who hire her. And when a client requests a show, and if Angie can gather enough dogs to make the trip worth taking, she takes it. Having the class bitch leave early messed up plans big time, but then again, "The best laid schemes of mice and men often go awry" and "It's a dog show; of course there will be surprises." All will have better luck next time :-D.

A Blog about Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Ranger

Ranger is my 4th Cardigan.

My first was Tessa. I lost her at 4½ years old after a long battle with idiopathic epilepsy.

My second is Lizzie, a lovely sable & white lady who ended up in rescue at 7 years old in the Atlanta, Georgia area after her original owner died. She has been a delight in my house for almost 4 years.

My third is Ella. Wonderful, crazy Ella. Since I have always been too nervous to get in a show ring, she was expertly handled by Angelia Hall. Unfortunately, she didn't turn out to be the show dog I had hoped she would, but is the pet anyone would love to have.

Which brings me to Ranger. Living in the Northwest, I had know about Kim Shira, Leo Eickhoff and Coedwig Cardigans. With Angie's help, all the dots connected and my name was stamped on top of Ranger's spotted head.

With his beautiful topline, strength of bone and winning personality, Ranger is a natural in the ring. He loves the attention and all those treats don't hurt, either. In October, he was shown to a Puppy Group 1 placement at Boise, Idaho's Saturday evening puppy match. He also appeared at both the Northern California Herding Association's and Sacramento Valley Dog Fanciers' 4-6 mon Beginning Puppy Classes, taking Puppy Group 2 placements at both shows.

Ranger will make his official appearance in the ring at the Wine Country Kennel Club's shows in Mid-November. Handled exclusively by Angelia Hall of Whimsy Show Dogs, these two have all the components to make a great team.
